From 1936-1970 our country minted no dollar coins, only paper currency. In 1971, the U.S. mint issued the Eisenhower dollar. The coin design honors both president Dwight D. Eisenhower and the first landing of man on the moon. Collector issues were struck in 40% silver. The uncirculated dollar was sealed in cellophane with a blue outer envelope (popular nickname 'Blue Ike'). The proof dollar is sealed in a plastic holder with a brown outer box (popular nickname 'Brown Ike').
